Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in that campaign, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
