The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
