The United States and United Kingdom Announce Tariff-Free Agreement on Prescription Drugs.

Britain and America have finalized a landmark commercial pact that will keep zero duties on British medicine products going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise funding on medicines through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these crucial exports will remain at nothing for a period of three years.

This agreement is in response to recent statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures discussed up to double the cost.

"This deal with the United Kingdom reinforces the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces much-needed fairness to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," an announcement said.

Economic Importance

Drugs are one of the Britain's largest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the biggest destination for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures indicate that in the year leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold pharmaceutical products worth billions to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This deal secures employment, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to become a global hub for life sciences," a government official commented.

Specific British Pledges

The deal involves several specific commitments from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to increase total public funding on medicines from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over medicine costs and approval rates.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US patients were charged several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS had to spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
